Another stunning milestone in the life of Captain Tom Moore has just happened.
Scientists trying to find a vaccine for the coronavirus might want to start bottling essence of Captain Tom Moore, because the man is damn near unstoppable. After having raised close to £29 million for NHS charities, made an appearance on the Piccadilly Circus billboards, and won a Pride of Britain award, he’s now achieved another historic first: becoming the oldest artist with a number one hit in the UK singles chart. I don’t really know where he found the time to record a single in amongst all these other accomplishments, but we’re quickly learning that there’s very little Captain Moore can’t do. Earlier this month, he lent his voice to a cover of You’ll Never Walk Alone, recorded with Michael Ball and The NHS Voices Of Care Choir.
After a tight race this week with The Weeknd’s reigning chart-topper Blinding Lights, Captain Moore and co emerged triumphant to claim the number one spot – although it must be noted that The Weeknd magnanimously tweeted his followers to support You’ll Never Walk Alone instead of his own hit.
everyone in the UK please support @captaintommoore / @mrmichaelball single so this incredible 99 yr old war veteran, walking for the British National Health Service @NHSuk & now raised $35 Million can have a No 1 for his 100th birthday in the UK!We’re routing for you. XO! pic.twitter.com/P788bggQRn

In hitting the top of the charts, Captain Moore has smashed a number of records. First, he’s become the oldest artist with a UK number one, and secondly, he’s now got the fastest-selling single of 2020 (another record he’s wrested from The Weeknd). But finally – and perhaps most excitingly – he’ll be at the top of the charts come Thursday, the day he turns 100. Outstanding stuff – and he’s still walking laps!
You can still donate to his NHS fundraiser here.
