This July and August, the usual songs of praise sung at Marylebone’s St Mary’s Church will change a little. Hum along to classical tributes to modern-day hitmakers, performed by string and piano performers – who’ll be lit up on stage by the glow of candlelight, no less. On July 22, St Mary’s Church will be bathed in the flickering glow of candlelight thanks to Candlelight: The Best Of Joe Hisaishi. There will be two shows taking place on the evening at 7 pm and 9 pm, so you can tailor your evening to suit any romantic dinners or post-work drinks you have planned. In each, a talented string quartet will treat you to a full hour of the film composer’s beautiful scores, transporting you into the spellbinding world of Studio Ghibli with magical melodies and sonorous harmonies. You can expect to hear music from all your fantastical favourites, including Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Neighbour Totoro. Tickets are available here.
Coldplay fan? On July 29, a Coldplay Candlelight concert will bring to life familiar hits from the chart-topping British band’s back catalogue, including Fix You, Don’t Panic, and Sky Full Of Stars. Prepare to be whisked away to Paradise as the evening unfolds. Tickets are available here.
Finally closing out the July lineup is a Candlelight concert celebrating the London icon and late great, Amy Winehouse. This tribute show will see her tracks reworked by a band and vocalist to give a fresh twist to the iconic tracks we know and love. So expect to hear Back To Black, Valerie, Rehab and more for this 75 minute extravaganza by candlelight on July 30. There are two shows taking place one kicking off at 7:00 pm and one at 9:15 pm so you can definitely fit this one into your plans. Also, on August 16, you can enjoy the musical evening of your Dreams: a Candlelight tribute to the legendary Fleetwood Mac. The rock band’s iconic tunes will be given a more classical twist, as they are performed by a pianist and violinist duo. Expect to hear Gypsy, Go Your Own Way and Gold Dust Woman – to name just a few – in a brand-new way.
St Mary’s Church enjoys an enviable Central London location in Marylebone, with Paddington, Mayfair and Regent’s Park close by. At its exterior, the Grade I-listed building has a distinctive rounded stone portico and round tower, while inside high ceilings, grand columns, and incredibly intricate architecture await – the most mesmerising of settings, further enjoyed under the glow of soft candlelight.
