When you think about the swanky south-west suburb of Wimbledon, there’s really only one thing that instantly springs to mind, right? Tennis. But beyond the games, sets, and matches, there’s a whole lot more to explore. And whilst I know that the term ‘hidden gem’ gets thrown around pretty liberally these days; I’m about to point you in the direction of a sparkling spot that lives up to the title in spades.
Tucked away between Wimbledon Common and Wimbledon Park is Buddhapadipa Temple. The very first Thai Buddhist temple to be built in the UK, this rather spectacular structure and its surrounding gardens boast both serenity and splendour – and should immediately be added to your must-visit list.

Buddhapadipa Temple was purchased by the Thai Government back in August 1965 for just Β£17,000 and was originally located in East Sheen. The need for an ordination hall to be added to the space meant that the temple had to be moved to a different location. The land on which Buddhapadipa Temple now sits was snapped up in 1975, the monks moved there the following year, and – well – the rest is history, really.
The temple is perched majestically at the top of a flight of stairs, making for a rather gorgeous sight the very moment you walk through the gates. We’d highly recommend you taking a moment to marvel at its beauty (and snap a few photos as you do so, of course) before ascending the steps. Once you’ve made it to the doors of the temple, you’ll be asked to take off your shoes if you fancy having a peek inside. The small room inside the temple features three Buddha statues and intricate murals that were painted by 30 Thai artists over the space of eight years.

Whilst we all know that it’s what’s on the inside that counts; you certainly won’t be disappointed by what you find outside of the temple. Spanning four acres, the grounds feature an ornamental lake that dates back to the 18th century, a small grove, a flower garden, and an orchard. If you visit on a weekend, you’ll also be able to swing by Tina’s Tea. This lovely little cafe serves up authentic Thai breakfasts and desserts; all of which can be eaten with a lovely view across the garden‘s pond.
Buddhapadipa Temple is free to enter between 9am and 6pm daily. Tina’s Tea is open on selected weekends, and you can find those specific dates on their Instagram page.
