Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced London’s first-ever Black on the Square is set to take place on September 2 in Trafalgar Square and will be a fantastic celebration of the richness of black culture and creativity. As the first event of its kind, the one-day family-friendly festival hopes to showcase the diversity of black talent and shine a light on creative talent from across London’s diverse communities.
The festival will be absolutely jam-packed with performances and showcases, including an array of exciting performances from jazz performances, spoken word, freestyle rap, and soul, to displaying creative talent with art and fashion to represent the breadth of Black talent from established acts alongside emerging talent, so there’s plenty to look forward to.
Black on the Square kicks off at 12pm and is made to be as inclusive as possible, welcoming visitors of all ages including families, is free to attend and guests will not need tickets to enter. The festival will also include vendors of Black-owned businesses who are keen to share delicious food from the Caribbean and Africa, along with artisan goods that range from accessories, homeware goods, gifts, and delicacies.
The mainstage will feature performances from an array of guests highlighting the diversity of musical talent in the Black community in London. The vibrancy of London’s Black-led nightlife scene will also be highlighted, with DJ sets and live music hosted by club nights and music collectives.
Black on the Square is an opportunity for Londoners and visitors to witness and celebrate the richness of London’s Black communities. It also delivers on the Mayor’s manifesto pledge to provide a public event that specifically celebrates Black culture and creativity. With such an amazing festival lined up, Londoners will be happy to know that the celebration is set to become a regular feature in the city’s calendar of cultural festivities hosted by the Mayor in Trafalgar Square including Diwali, Eid, St Patrick’s Day, Chanukah, and Pride. Mayor Sadiq Khan has remarked, “Our diversity is our greatest strength, and we will celebrate it at every opportunity as we continue to build a better, more equitable and prosperous city for all.”
