Celebrate black business, art, music, food and much more at Peckham Levels and Pop Brixton.
Black History month takes place throughout the month of October and, although we should be supporting these businesses all year around, it’s a great chance to enjoy some wonderful events at some of the best venues across London.
Two such venues that fall into that category are Peckham Levels and Pop Brixton. The south London spots are putting on an exciting schedule of events throughout the second half of October, showcasing a celebration of black culture in the city.
Kicking off proceedings is a special comedy night at Peckham Levels on October 22, courtesy of UTC Management, who are well-known for stars Mo Gilligan, Babatunde Aleshe and more. In the night of hilarity you’ll be treated to performances from comedians including Eddie Kadi, Thanyia Moore and Ola Labib. (Get your tickets here).
Over at Pop Brixton two days later (October 24), you’ll be able to attend a Brazza Black hair expo, which features guest speakers, workshops that teach different hair techniques as well a market area to showcase black owned hair brands and retailers. It’s free to attend with no ticket required between 11am-4pm.
Following this are three more excellent free events at Peckham Levels, kicking off on October 27 (7-9pm) with a Black History Month film screening show. Catch screenings of fantastic short films from rising stars, with a discussion to follow from special guest on.
Then, October 28 (10am-3pm) offers a family-friendly dance class for the kids and teens enjoying their half term; teaching the origins of Hip Hop and Afro street dance culture while helping them perfect their moves. (Free tickets can be booked here).
Last, but by no means least, Peckham Levels are offering up drumming workshop from the master of the drumkit, Kalifa Conte. You’ll get to experience an interactive masterclass that includes stories on the culture of drumming, with Kalifa himself being an 8th generation African Griot storyteller. Head down on October 31 at 11am-1pm (no ticket required).
