London is known for its stars, both musical and celestial. Spots like Primrose Hill and Richmond Park offer a tranquility to look up at the night sky. Or, you can escape the city lights and take a better look at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. But sometimes, to truly grasp the monumental scale of the universe, you need more than a city vantage point. You need a different perspective, one which translates the infinite into something you can actually feel.
That is exactly what Bach in Space in London delivers. A cosmic symphonic journey featuring majestic live piano performances, Johann Sebastian Bach’s timeless compositions are accompanied by high-resolution space photography sourced directly from NASA and ESA. Few things give voice to the inexpressible quite like classical music and the deep cosmos but, by elegantly synchronising the two, Bach in Space invites you to sit still and truly feel the weight of it.

What is Bach in Space?
Bach in Space is an immersive audiovisual concert combining live piano performances of Bach’s compositions with high-resolution cosmic imagery from NASA and ESA. Designed to complement rather than overwhelm the music, projections of cosmic sweeps and space phenomena directly follow the phrasing and dynamics of the piano.
At the piano for Bach in Space, Xiaowen Shang is an award-winning pianist and harpsichordist nominated as one of BBC Music Magazine’s Rising Stars. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, she has performed at prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, earning acclaim for her musicality and inventive interpretations.
With a repertoire spanning centuries, from early music to contemporary compositions, Shang brings a distinctive sensitivity to Bach’s intricate works such asGoldberg Variations, the Italian Concerto, and The Well-Tempered Clavier, making her an ideal guide for this journey through music and the cosmos.
Bach and the Cosmos: A Natural Harmony
Johann Sebastian Bach’s music is renowned for its architectural logic and remarkable mathematical precision. Writing at the height of the Baroque era, he wove complex, independent melodies into highly disciplined structures, proving that rigorous logic can still carry profound emotion. This underlying symmetry, where every note feels perfectly calculated, mirrors the laws of physics, making his compositions an acoustic reflection of cosmic order.
This same ordered complexity appears in the concert’s deep-space imagery. The highly symmetrical rings of the Engraved Hourglass Nebula mirror the precise, layered structure of a Bach fugue, while the sharply defined centre of the Sombrero Galaxy reflects the clarity and balance found throughout his compositions.
Whether you are a longtime classical listener, a space enthusiast, or someone curious to hear Bach differently, this concert is a unique experience that highlights the shared architecture of music and the universe.
