London doesn’t seem to be particularly short on magical festive train rides this year. But we’re always happy to budge up and make room for one more. Especially when the jolly journey in question comes in the form of the Audley End Miniature Railway Christmas Special. So wrap up warm, folks, because we’re off on another festive day out.
The Audley End Miniature Railway
Scenically situated near Saffron Walden (the very spot that was recently named the UK’s best place to live) is an enchanting ancient woodland. And tucked away inside that gorgeous woodland is where you’ll find what is – quite possibly – the most way to spend the day near London.
Created by Lord Braybrooke (who had a passion for steam trains), the Audley End Miniature Railway opened its doors to the public in 1964. Still in the very same family, the miniature railway is now run by his daughter. And each Christmas, the railway receives and magical makeover, ready to serve up some festive cheer by the carriage-load.

The Audley End Miniature Railway Christmas Special
With something spectacular to lay your eyes on at every turn, the Christmas Special invites families to hop on board and head on an immersive journey through the wintery wonderland. Guests will arrive at Father Christmas’ workshop, where they’ll be greeted by Holly Christmas fairy who will guide passengers onto the train. During the journey, visitors will meet Father Christmas, chat to some of his friendly elves, make their own reindeer food with the reindeer keepers, and write and post letters to Santa.
Guests will also have the chance to take a seasonal stroll through the forest, and discover the hidden homes of fairies and elves. There’s also a stage show to watch, a woodland play park to let of some steam in, and a Christmas carousel to take a ride on. They’ve certainly gone for the more is more approach to the festive season, haven’t they?

With each step chug, passengers will be plunged deeper into the spirit of the season. There are only a few dates left to hop aboard and tickets tend to go fairly quickly, so we’d recommend getting your (ice) skates on if you want to snap up a ticket.
Getting to Audley End from London
Audley End is approximately an hour-long drive from London, and there is free parking available there. Non-drivers can hop on a speedy service from Tottenham Hale to Audley End, and the miniature railway is just a quick onwards bus from there.
