Just as the weather started to get cooler this week and we were able to enjoy the sunshine without the unbearable heat, it looks like another heatwave could be on the way.
So strap yourselves in for more sweaty nights, get the portable fan charged and get the paddling pool out of the shed because early forecasts are suggesting that July will bring hotter average temperatures.
A July heatwave
Later this week, temperatures are set to rise to 29°C and reach 31 °C on Sunday. According to many forecasts, including the BBC and WX charts, these highs of 30°C+ are set to last for around 2 weeks, creating heatwave conditions.
Currently Thursday 9th July is set to be the warmest day reaching 32 °C.
Officially a heatwave is when the temperature stays above a certain threshold for at least three days, according to the Met Office. While that threshold varies across the UK, for London it the threshold stands at 28°C .
A record-breaking summer
This upcoming heatwave comes after we experienced the hottest June temperatures on record since 1976 and a red weather warning.
While in the short term it might mean enjoying warmer temperatures, many activitsts have noted that higher temperatures are a huge concern for climate change. Just this week a new report indicated that London could lose most of its trees by the end of the century due to climate change.
There are also calls for a maximum working temperature to be implemented, as well as measures such as cooling systems being installed in schools to prevent closures in hot weather.
