Fleetwood Mac bassist John McVie’s love of penguins dates back to the late ’60s, when he lived near London Zoo. Legend has it he would spend hours watching the birds waddle around their enclosure—a fascination that extended to a penguin tattoo on his forearm. Before long, his favourite flightless bird had become the band’s mascot, even lending its name and imagery to their 1973 album, Penguin.
In 1977, the band’s bird obsession took to new heights as they commissioned a 70-foot inflatable penguin that was supposed to fly over the audience during the Rumours tour. Because of a technical malfunction, the bird never actually fully inflated; instead, it floundered at the back of the stage.
This Friday, 6 November, Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits are getting a classical makeover at Central Hall Westminster. The intimate tribute concert swaps guitar riffs for bows, with “Go Your Own Way” and “Landslide” on the bill. Expect considerably less band drama and 0 flying penguins, but still plenty to get misty-eyed about.

A Fleetwood Mac tribute concert in London
This Friday, 6 November, Fleetwood Mac’s music is heading to Central Hall Westminster, where trained musicians will take on their most popular songs, only this time with bows rather than guitar picks.
The programme moves from hits like “Go Your Own Way”, “Everywhere” and “Little Lies” to fan favourites like “Songbird”, “Gold Dust Woman” and “Never Going Back Again”. There’s no vocalist, so the focus is all on the musical arrangements that fans have hummed and sung along to for over 50 years.
Central Hall Westminster brings a little grandeur to proceedings, with a sweeping staircase inspired by the Paris Opera House, marble detailing and a Great Hall crowned by Europe’s largest self-supporting domed ceiling. There’s plenty to look at, but the candlelit stage and string arrangements of Fleetwood Mac’s classics will definitely give the hall some competition for your attention.
The 60-minute concert begins at 9pm, with doors opening 45 minutes beforehand. Tickets start at £20 per person and seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis in each zone. Late entry isn’t permitted, so don’t take “Go Your Own Way” too literally on the journey there.
