No início do século XIX, o rápido crescimento da população londrina foi demasiado grande para os cemitérios do centro da cidade, que estavam literalmente a transbordar de corpos. Posteriormente – e inspirado pelo sucesso do espantoso Cemitério Père Lachaise, em Paris, sobre o Canal da Mancha – o parlamento britânico decidiu criar uma série de cemitérios privados em Londres, que ficavam efetivamente fora do centro da cidade. Durante a década seguinte, foram construídos sete cemitérios. O seu nome? Sim, adivinhou – os “Sete Magníficos” cemitérios:
1. Cemitério de Highgate, Highgate
Para começar este resumo dos “Sete Cemitérios Magníficos” em Londres que tem de explorar em Londres está, bem, um dos cemitérios mais famosos do mundo, sejamos honestos. Highgate é um local verdadeiramente fascinante (não a sério) para passear, e os túmulos e mausoléus – que estão cobertos de folhagem abundante – são onde os arquitectos funeráriosdão largas à sua imaginação.
No Cemitério Oeste, o fascínio vitoriano pelos egípcios resultou na deslumbrante Avenida Egípcia, bem como em numerosos túmulos impressionantes. Entretanto, o igualmente impressionante Lebanon Circle tem aparecido em muitas fotos do Instagram ao longo dos anos. E menos bonitas, mas muito mais assustadoras (e supostamente assombradas por um ghoul alto e sinistro com olhos vermelhos brilhantes) são as Catacumbas do Terraço subterrâneo – por isso, só entre se tiver coragem!
Como se isso não bastasse, também pode tropeçar em alguns túmulos de celebridades – o mais famoso dos quais é nada menos que o famoso filósofo alemão Karl Marx.

2. Cemitério de Brompton, Fulham
O deslumbrante Cemitério de Brompton, classificado como Grau I, perto de Kensington, é o local de descanso de mais de 200.000 pessoas, cujos túmulos são comemorados com uma série de memoriais intrincados – incluindo colunas imponentes e anjos de luto. É também o local de descanso final de Emmeline Pankhurst – a corajosa líder das sufragistas que lutaram arduamente pelo direito de voto das mulheres – e do Dr. John Snow – cujo trabalho pioneiro estabeleceu as descobertas de que a cólera se propagava através da água.
Para além de alguma arquitetura requintada espalhada por todo o lado, há também muita vida selvagem aqui residente, bem como um pequeno café encantador no extremo norte – perfeito para uma chávena de chá e uma fatia de bolo depois da caminhada.

3. Cemitério de Abney Park, Stoke Newington
Outro dos “Sete Magníficos” cemitérios de Londres, o Abney Park é um sítio muito agradável para um passeio. Sabe, para um cemitério e tudo mais. Passeando por caminhos tortuosos e por entre a extensa cobertura de árvores, irá encontrar uma arquitetura vitoriana deslumbrante e uma capela bastante bonita no centro do parque.
É também uma reserva de vida selvagem local designada, e há de tudo aqui, desde pica-paus-malhados a gaviões e até corujas! Tal como em Brompton, há 200.000 pessoas enterradas aqui, e também são organizados eventos regulares, como passeios guiados e até “passeios de histórias de fantasmas“. Caramba!

4. Cemitério de Kensal Green, Kensal Green
Criado em 1832, Kensal Green foi o primeiro cemitério-jardim e o primeiro dos “Sete Magníficos”. O cemitério, muitas vezes referido como o “Cemitério Geral de Todas as Almas”, é o local de descanso final de centenas de pessoas diferentes; de príncipes a pobres, escritores e actores, engenheiros e artistas, e assim por diante.
Entre outros nomes notáveis, encontram-se os autores William Makepeace Thackeray e Wilkie Collins, e o engenheiro Charles Babbage, conhecido pela sua invenção do primeiro computador digital automático! Há também a “Capela Anglicana” que se encontra mesmo no coração do cemitério e que contém vários túmulos e até uma catacumba assustadora escondida por baixo. 5. Cemitério de Nunhead, Nunhead
Seguindo para o sul do rio, agora para a periferia de Peckham, você se encontrará no Cemitério Nunhead – sem dúvida o mais atraente de todos os sete dos “Sete Cemitérios Magníficos” (ok, como um sudeste de Londres, posso ser tendencioso).
Com 52 acres, é o segundo maior dos sete, e só reabriu após um período significativo de encerramento em 2001. Dado que é talvez o menos conhecido, é também o mais selvagem dos cemitérios de Londres. Muitas áreas estão cobertas de hera e trepadeiras, aumentando a atmosfera assustadora, e este ano até estão a exibir aqui o filme “An American Werewolf in London“. Por isso, se está à procura de uma sessão de Halloween assustadora, então é melhor vir até aqui!

6. Cemitério de West Norwood, West Norwood
Outra joia do sul de Londres, o cemitério de West Norwood possui quase 70 edifícios e estruturas listadas como Grade II e Grade II*, incluindo uma necrópole ortodoxa grega dedicada com 19 mausoléus e monumentos listados, bem como catacumbas e um belo jardim de rosas.
Com 40 hectares, é o mais pequeno dos “Sete Magníficos”, embora valha bem a pena explorá-lo se alguma vez estiver nesta zona da floresta. As catacumbas estão abertas ocasionalmente para visitas guiadas… coisas assustadoras!

7. Cemitério de Tower Hamlets, Bow
O último dos nossos “Sete Magníficos” cemitérios em Londres, o Tower Hamlets Cemetery foi aberto para enterros em 1841, e é um belo lugar para ser enterrado, para ser honesto.
O local classificado, entre Stepney Green e Bow, tem uma rede variada de caminhos panorâmicos que o levarão num passeio por bosques atmosféricos e também por bonitos prados de flores silvestres. Durante o passeio, verá muitas aves, borboletas e plantas raramente vistas em Londres, bem como monumentos, sepulturas e túmulos classificados como Grau II, claro.

8. Cemitério Velho de Camberwell, Dulwich
Ok, pode não fazer parte dos “Sete Magníficos”, mas continuamos a achar este lugar muito encantador. É um local tranquilo e sereno que vale bem a pena visitar se quiser ter uma ideia da história de Dulwich e dos seus arredores imediatos e das pessoas que lá viveram.
Existe aqui uma casa de estilo gótico que foi restaurada após um incêndio na década de 1970, bem como 288 sepulturas de serviço da Commonwealth da Primeira Guerra Mundial. Existem também dois memoriais Screen Wall, que mencionam os nomes dos homens tragicamente mortos durante a 1ª e a 2ª Guerra Mundial, respetivamente.
