(Gibt es eine bessere Beschäftigung an einem Regentag, als sich in einer gemütlichen Bibliothek zu verstecken?). Und Londons Bibliotheken gehören zu den besten der Welt – von viktorianischen Klassikern bis hin zu kühnen modernen Beispielen. Lassen Sie sich also von unserem Führer zu den schönsten Bibliotheken Londons inspirieren. Vergessen Sie nur nicht, Ihre Bücher pünktlich zurückzugeben…
1. Die Maughan-Bibliothek
Diese Bibliothek kann man nur von außen bewundern (es sei denn, man ist Student des King’s College London oder schafft es, während des Wochenendes der offenen Tür hineinzukommen), aber sie ist ein echter Augenschmaus. Das neugotische Gebäude aus dem neunzehnten Jahrhundert, das unter Denkmalschutz steht, wurde von Sir James Pennethorne entworfen und 1851 erbaut. Der prächtige zwölfeckige Lesesaal der Maughan Library kam unter anderem in The Da Vinci Code vor, wird aber eher als Studienraum genutzt. Durch eine 35 Millionen Pfund teure Renovierung wurde die Maughan Library zur größten neuen Universitätsbibliothek, die seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Großbritannien gebaut wurde – vielleicht lohnt es sich also, wieder zur Universität zu gehen?

2. Bethnal Green Bibliothek
Die Bethnal Green Library feierte im Jahr 2022 ihren 100. Geburtstag, was bedeutet, dass dieser Ort eine gehörige Portion edwardianisches Flair versprüht. Der blau getönte zentrale Raum ist durch die riesigen Oberlichter mit natürlichem Licht durchflutet, während die holzgetäfelte Eingangshalle einen in die Vergangenheit zu versetzen scheint. Es hat sich den Status als denkmalgeschütztes Gebäude (Grade II) auf jeden Fall verdient! (Und sie hat sich ihren Platz in dieser Liste der schönsten Bibliotheken Londons definitiv verdient. 3. Die Londoner Bibliothek
Die London Library ist eine der größten unabhängigen Leihbibliotheken der Welt und eine wahre literarische Institution. Sie ist auch ziemlich ästhetisch. Die 1841 gegründete Bibliothek verfügt über eine bemerkenswerte Sammlung von über einer Million Büchern und Zeitschriften. Und als ob das noch nicht genug wäre, werden jährlich etwa 8.000 neue Bände hinzugefügt. Ein Jahresabonnement von 500 Pfund mag ein wenig happig erscheinen, aber dafür erhalten Sie Zugang zu einigen erstaunlichen Raritäten, einer eklektischen Mischung von Titeln und die Möglichkeit, sich mit anderen Mitgliedern auszutauschen – zu denen eine ganze Reihe von literarischen Größen gehören. Außerdem hat der Auftritt in „Killing Eve“ dem Club einen gewissen „Millennial“-Charme verliehen.

4. Senatshaus-Bibliothek
Nichts passt so gut zu einem guten Buch wie ein herrlich bequemer Stuhl. Und die mit Nieten besetzten Ledersessel der Senate House Library sind ein idealer Ort, um die Stunden in der Gesellschaft unserer guten literarischen Freunde zu verbringen. Es gibt Tageskarten und Sommermitgliedschaften, aber Studenten der University of London haben freien Eintritt, da es ihre Hauptbibliothek ist. Das schlichte Äußere des Gebäudes war auch schon in Batman Begins zu sehen … Ein feiner literarischer und filmischer Stammbaum!

5. Guildhall Bibliothek
Hier werden Sie keine Exemplare von Stolz und Vorurteil finden. Stattdessen finden Sie hier eine der umfangreichsten Geschichten Londons, die es gibt. Über 200.000 Titel füllen die Regale der Guildhall Library. Die Werke bieten einen allumfassenden Einblick in das Leben und die Zeiten unserer Stadt – sei es durch Kochbücher aus dem siebzehnten Jahrhundert, viktorianische Flugblätter oder Handelsverzeichnisse. Die Bibliothek ist ein unschätzbares Hilfsmittel für die historische Forschung, vor allem wenn Sie sich für Samuel Pepys, Thomas More oder John Wilkes interessieren, denn sie beherbergt Sondersammlungen, die diesen Persönlichkeiten gewidmet sind.

6. Die Britische Bibliothek
Keine Liste der Londoner Bibliotheken, die etwas auf sich hält, ist ohne diese Bibliothek vollständig. Die British Library ist die Nationalbibliothek des Vereinigten Königreichs und verfügt über satte 170 Millionen Objekte – darunter Artefakte aus allen Epochen der schriftlichen Zivilisation, was verdammt beeindruckend ist. Die Bibliothek ruht sich auch nicht auf ihren Lorbeeren aus, denn jedes Jahr kommen drei Millionen neue Objekte in die Sammlung. Jeder kann sie besuchen (obwohl die Lesesäle nur für Mitglieder zugänglich sind), und der sechsstöckige Glasturm im Inneren der Bibliothek, der von der Beinecke Library der Yale University inspiriert wurde, ist zu einem ziemlich fotogenen Bestandteil geworden. Der Turm beherbergt die King’s Library mit 65.000 gedruckten Bänden, 19.000 Flugschriften sowie Manuskripten und Karten, die von König Georg III. zwischen 1763 und 1820 gesammelt wurden. Das ist eine Schande für meine Sammlung!

7. Kensington Central Bibliothek
Die ebenfalls unter Denkmalschutz stehende Kensington Central Library wurde an der Stelle eines großen alten Hauses errichtet, das während des Blitzkriegs zerstört wurde. Dunkles Holz und prächtige, gestreifte Säulen sorgen für eine wunderbare Ästhetik – auch wenn das Design während des Baus Proteste hervorrief. Mit ihren regelmäßigen Veranstaltungen für Erwachsene und Kinder hat sie sich auch gut in die Gemeinde integriert.

8. SOAS-Bibliothek
Die Bibliothek der School of Oriental and African Studies ist ein faszinierendes Labyrinth aus Beton und Papier, das ein wenig aussieht, als sei es einem Andreas Gursky-Foto entsprungen. Der Architekt Denys Lasdun ist der Mann hinter dem beeindruckenden Design, das sich durch brutalistische Effizienz und starke Beleuchtung auszeichnet. Mit ihren 1,3 Millionen Bänden ist sie auch nicht nur ein hübsches Gesicht. Eine Sammlung, die so bedeutend ist, dass sie Gelehrte aus der ganzen Welt anzieht.

9. Die Nationale Kunstbibliothek
Die Bilder werden ihr wirklich gerecht: Die National Art Library ist einfach atemberaubend. Verschnörkelt, vergoldet und in gedeckten Grüntönen gehalten, ist sie verständlicherweise sehr beliebt bei den Instagram-Fans. Sie befindet sich im ersten Stock des Victoria & Albert Museums und ist Londons wichtigste öffentliche Referenzbibliothek für die schönen und dekorativen Künste. Hier finden Sie Bücher über Drucke, Zeichnungen, Holzarbeiten, Textilien, Metallarbeiten und vieles mehr. Wenn Sie Ihre Augen von der Dekoration abwenden können, versteht sich. Und das Beste ist, dass die Benutzung für alle Bürger kostenlos ist!

10. Die Wellcome-Bibliothek
Die Wellcome Collection ist dank anregender Ausstellungen, historischer medizinischer Artefakte und eines erstklassigen Cafés ohnehin einen Besuch wert, aber die wunderschöne Bibliothek ist das Tüpfelchen auf dem i (und wenn wir schon beim Thema sind, sollten Sie sich auch das Angebot des Cafés gönnen). Die Wellcome Library befasst sich mit dem Thema Gesundheit und Medizingeschichte, und Sie können hier Mitglied werden, egal ob Sie ein angehender Arzt oder einfach nur ein neugieriger Geist sind. Hier gibt es Bücher über alles von Gender bis Alchemie und Hexerei!

11. BFI Reuben Bibliothek
Eine weitere Spezialbibliothek, die BFI Reuben Library, widmet sich – wenig überraschend – den Themen Film, Fernsehen und Bewegtbild. Es gibt hier eine Menge Bücher über das Handwerk und die Geschichte des Films, aber die speziellen Betrachtungsstationen sind der Star des Museums. Sie sind über das ganze Haus verteilt und ermöglichen es Ihnen, in den umfangreichen Filmkatalog des BFI einzutauchen. Es finden regelmäßig Sonderveranstaltungen statt, und da die Benutzung der Bibliothek kostenlos ist, empfehlen wir dringend einen Besuch.

12. Peckham-Bibliothek
Die Wahl mag umstritten sein, aber Fans moderner Architektur werden an dieser Bibliothek viel Gefallen finden. Die ungewöhnliche Form und die auffälligen Farben der Peckham Library machen sie zu einem auffälligen Gebäude, das bei den Bewohnern von Peckham sehr beliebt geworden ist. Das L-förmige, mit Kupfer verkleidete Gebäude ist auch bei den Architekten sehr beliebt, denn es wurde im Jahr 2000 mit dem renommierten Stirling Prize ausgezeichnet. Schauen Sie sich die Aussicht von der Rückseite an, wo farbige Glasscheiben den Blick auf die Skyline der Stadt verändern.

13. Canada Water Bibliothek
Kommen Sie wegen der bunten Kacheln und der Zickzack-Regale, und bleiben Sie wegen der coolen, holzverkleideten Wendeltreppe. Die Canada Water Library lehnt zwar etwas bedenklich über dem Wasser, aber das bronzene, sechseckige Äußere lässt das Flair der Innenräume erahnen, die sich perfekt für ein kleines Fotoshooting eignen. Ein umfangreiches Veranstaltungsprogramm, darunter Gruppen für kreatives Schreiben, Autorengespräche und Englischkurse, ist eine schöne Attraktion. Und mit einem Aufführungsraum mit 150 Plätzen im Erdgeschoss gibt es viel Platz für Veranstaltungen. Trotzdem, diese Innenräume… Bibliotheken sind wirklich nur ein Vorwand für Architekten, sich auszutoben, nicht wahr? (Und wir LIEBEN es!)

14. Die Nationale Bibliothek für Poesie
Die National Poetry Library ist ein Anwärter auf den Titel einer der besten Bibliotheken in ganz London. Sie ist vielleicht etwas weniger ästhetisch als andere Bibliotheken auf unserer Liste, aber die National Poetry Library ist die größte öffentliche Gedichtsammlung der Welt. Sie wurde 1953 gegründet und von T.S. Eliot eröffnet, zog aber 1988 an ihren neuen Standort im Southbank Centre um. Seamus Heaney wurde bei dieser Gelegenheit zum Anschneiden der Torte herangezogen. Sie dürfen sich Bücher ausleihen, aber da überall Sitzsäcke verteilt sind, empfehle ich Ihnen, sich eine Carol Ann Duffy zu schnappen und es sich hier gemütlich zu machen.

15. St. Bride Bibliothek
Die St. Bride Library im Herzen der Stadt beherbergt eine der bemerkenswertesten Sammlungen von Büchern und Archiven zur Geschichte des Drucks, der Typografie und des Designs, die in einem wunderschönen Lesesaal untergebracht sind. Sie ist eine Fundgrube für Design- und Druckliebhaber, denn sie beherbergt auch originale antike Druckpressen, die die Gäste bei den von St Bride veranstalteten Workshops benutzen können. Bitte beachten Sie, dass Sie vor dem Besuch der Bibliothek einen Platz reservieren müssen.

16. Der Lesesaal im Britischen Museum
Wenn es um Zentren des Wissens und der Geschichte geht, gibt es nicht viel Beeindruckenderes (oder Atemberaubenderes) als den Lesesaal des British Museum. Er wurde sogar als eine der beliebtesten Bibliotheken der Welt anerkannt! Leider können Sie diese Bibliothek nur aus der Ferne bewundern – oder im Rahmen von Führungen, die von Zeit zu Zeit stattfinden. Nur bestimmte Studenten und Forscher haben Zugang zu dieser besonderen Bibliothek.
