London ist eine sehr alte Stadt, in der einige alte Traditionen einfach dazugehören. Eine dieser Traditionen zeigt sich in den berühmten Londoner Kneipen, die jahrelang überlebt haben, um ein Grundnahrungsmittel der Hauptstadt aufrechtzuerhalten: den Ausschank eines Pints an die durstigen Gäste der Stadt.
Ye Olde Cock Taven ist eine der ältesten Kneipen der Stadt, deren Geschichte bis in die kerzenbeleuchteten Abende des Jahres 1549 zurückreicht. 1887 wurde sie an ihrem heutigen Standort eröffnet, um spätviktorianische Kneipen zu beherbergen. In dieser Zeit wurden hier Krüge mit Bier für eine beachtliche Anzahl von Menschen ausgeschenkt – darunter auch einige Namen, die als Synonym für die Londoner Literaturgeschichte stehen. Es soll sogar der schmalste Pub der ganzen Stadt sein!
Ye Olde Cock Tavern
Dieses auffallend hohe und schlanke Pub-Gebäude fällt bei einem Spaziergang durch die Fleet Street sofort ins Auge. Wenn Sie das Gebäude betreten, werden Sie nicht nur mit einer Reihe alter Gemälde begrüßt, sondern auch mit dem Wissen über die historischen Persönlichkeiten, die das Gebäude betreten haben. Sowohl Charles Dickens als auch der seismische Tagebuchschreiber Samuel Pepys sollen zu ihrer Zeit Besucher der Ye Olde Cock Tavern gewesen sein, und der Pub wird sogar in Virginia Woolfs Werk Orlando von 1928 namentlich erwähnt.
Sie erinnert sich an die Kneipe in ihrer Form aus dem 16. Jahrhundert und spricht von einem Treffen dort, als sie noch Cock Tavern hieß: „Er konnte sich, wie er sagte, an eine Nacht in der Cock Tavern in der Fleet Street erinnern, als Kit Marlowe dort war und einige andere“. Abgesehen von der Erwähnung in Pepys‘ Tagebuch finden Sie auch schriftliche Worte über Ye Olde Cock Tavern von Alfred Lord Tennyson, der dafür bekannt war, dass er mit„O Plump head-waiter at the Cock“ sprach.
Wenn Sie also an einem kalten Novemberabend an einem schaumigen Pint nippen, sollten Sie die Geschichte des Ortes, an dem Sie sitzen, nicht außer Acht lassen – nehmen Sie sich einen Moment Zeit, um die moschusartige Umgebung einzuatmen und sich vorzustellen, dass Sie neben Dickens oder Woolf saßen, als ihnen die ersten Worte für The Pickwick Papers oder Orlando durch den Kopf schossen. Dann gehen Sie und spielen Sie eine Partie Shuffleboard. Das gibt es hier jetzt auch. Zweifellos wäre das bei den Autoren von einst gut angekommen.
