1992/93 has gone down as a landmark season for English football. Manchester United won their first league title under Sir Alex Ferguson, Alan Shearer signed for Blackburn Rovers for a British record fee of £3.6 million, and Aston Villa’s Paul McGrath took home the PFA Player Of The Season award.
But that year was also the very first of the Premier League in its current guise, and last weekend marked its 30th season. And it’s safe to say lots has changed during that time — for starters, the winners of the first season didn’t get off to the best of starts (sorry United fans).
But, it’s a landmark worth celebrating, with millions tuning into the most-watched league in the world every week, and Classic Football Shirts are putting on a time capsule event to do just that.
The vintage shirt selling site’s ‘Goal Hanging’ event will focus on 30 years of the Premier League. Essentially, it’ll be one big evening of those nostalgic football chats we’ve all had at the pub, with a healthy dose of interactive activities thrown in. Your ticket gets you a free pint too, which is sure to have you saying things like “Eric Cantona was mint, wasn’t he?” in no time at all.
Ahead of the second round of Premier League fixtures, you can head down to their space in east London this Friday (August 12) for an evening of quizzes, competitions, prizes and giveaways, as you dive into a ’90s time capsule with retro video games to play and music from the time blaring out the speakers.
There’s a bar on hand to keep the drinks flowing, and those attending can also get a sweet 19.92% (see what they did there) discount on vintage pieces from Classic Football Shirts.
Tickets for the Goal Hanging event celebrating 30 years of the Premier League costs £5 and can be found here. Find it at Classic Football Shirts London, 17 Commercial Street, E1 6NE (nearest station is Aldgate East).
