Last summer, rumours swirled about a Universal Studios theme park just 40 minutes from London, building on 2023 whispers that Universal had bought land at the former Kempston Hardwick brickworks in Bedfordshire – now confirmed as true and progressing.
Universal theme park given planning permission
Planning permission has been officially granted for the UK’s first Universal Studios theme park in Kempston Hardwick near Bedford, marking a major step forward for the long-rumoured project. The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government approved it via a Special Development Order, bypassing local procedures.
Set to open by 2031, the resort spans 476 acres with rides up to 377ft (115m) tall which is Europe’s highest plus themed attractions potentially featuring James Bond, Paddington, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Minions, and Shrek.
It promises to be one of the largest and most advanced amusement parks on the continent situated approximately 90 miles from London, marking a significant milestone for the entertainment giant. Alongside the park, visitors will also have a 500-room hotel, retail outlets, dining venues, and entertainment complexes.

Peak days could draw 55,000 visitors, with over eight million annually expected, rivalling Disneyland Paris as Europe’s top draw.
Universal projects 20,000 construction jobs and 8,000 permanent roles, with 80% for locals, positioning it as a major regional employer. Bedford Borough Council forecasts £50bn in economic benefits after years of collaboration.
The site benefits from rail links and London Luton Airport proximity. Plans include an expanded Wixams station, a new Stewartby station by East West Rail, A421 slip roads, and local road improvements like Manor Road upgrades. National Highways confirms network enhancements, including a new A421 link road.
Page Thompson, president of new ventures, Universal Destinations & Experiences, said: “I want to express my sincere appreciation for the continued engagement from Bedford and the various communities surrounding our site, as well as the many other national and local stakeholders who have provided feedback and expressed such enthusiasm on the transformative nature of our project.”
This development marks Universal’s sixth theme park globally. The company already operates parks in Orlando and Los Angeles in the United States; Osaka, Japan; Sentosa Island, Singapore; and Beijing, China.
