I know it’s occasionally easy to forget, but there’s a whole lot more to our capital city than skyscrapers and stroppy commuters. Who knew?! Take the Onion Garden, for example. Tucked away slap bang in the middle of Westminster; this not-for-profit community hub (and its truly remarkable owner) is a ray of sunshine in what can sometimes feel like a rather gloomy city.
Just three years ago, this horticultural haven was nothing more than an abandoned corner of concrete. But having been transformed back in 2021 by Chief Onion (yes, that’s his official job title), Jens Jakobsen, the Onion Garden is now a flourishing green space, boasting over 200 species of plants and an oasis of peace and tranquility for the community. Not bad, hey?
What can you expect to see at the Onion Garden?
As the name might suggest, you’ll see your fair share of onions when wondering through the garden. Primarily because the Egyptians thought onions were pretty darn special, and therefore so does Jens. Alongside an abundance of onions, visitors can expect to see a variety of herbs, wildflowers, and fruit trees growing. An impressive amount has been fit into the rather snug space, and there’s something gorgeous to gawp at with every turn you take.
Jens noticed that there was a need for a safe space in the community – and this free-to-visit garden is exactly that. Absolutely anybody is welcome to enjoy it, provided that they share in Jens’ philosophy of showing kindness and tolerance to all living creatures. The space oozes calm and joyfulness, with Jens’ passion for plants and making people happy evident throughout the garden.
The Onion Garden is also home to an orangery, a newly-created pavilion, and a beautiful café. They host various events, too. And any money made from the café or the events held there is invested straight back into the growth of the garden. It’s a ever-growing green space for ‘gathering, connecting, enjoying, sharing, collaborating, inspiring, and learning’. And it’s most certainly one of the most wholesome and unique places you can visit in the capital city.
