Rainbow bagels, avocado on toast and juicy Salt Bae-esque steaks. This new exhibition is all about good-looking food.
You’re at a restaurant, your food arrives, and you’re absolutely starving… but you refuse to pick up that fork until you’ve stood on the chair, rearranged the table, tried a few angles, taken a few pictures with the flash, a few without, added various filters, and pissed off your friends, family, boyfriends, girlfriends and everyone in the entire restaurant.
We’re obsessed.
If you’ve ever scrolled through Instagram then you’ll know that basically every other post is food. Some of it is pretty sh*t (we all have that one friend who insists on snapping every sloppy meal they eat), but others make your mouth water, your tummy rumble and your insides feel a little tingly. #FoodPorn is one of the most-used hashtags on Instagram, at over 130 million posts and counting.
Pizza is the most Instagrammed food, followed by sushi, steak and burgers. No surprises there.
Now, an exhibition entitled ‘Food For Being Looked At’ has opened at The Photographers’ Gallery and it’s all about juicy, gooey, drool-worthy food. You can expect to see lots of avocado, plenty of #yolkporn, foods that should absolutely not be the colour of rainbows, healthy smoothie bowls with perfectly placed chia seeds, and other valiant food trends.
Food For Being Looked At will be at The Photographer’s Gallery until October 8th. Find it at 16-18 Ramillies St, Soho, near Oxford Circus station, W1F 7LW.
