It’s matcha, but not as you know it at OHH Cha.
Looking for a decent cup of tea? You’ve just met your matcha. Tucked away in the back of Muji on Tottenham Court Road sits OHH Cha, a cosy, curtain-enclosed matcha tea bar. And unlike the lurid green powder that you find stirred into hot water or tossed into a cake mix, this is proper, well-sourced matcha that’ll have you wishing it was tea time all the time.
OHH Cha is bright, modern, and sparsely decorated – seemingly at odds with the nearly thousand-year old tea it heroes, but nevertheless very on-trend in 2018. The bar offers eight matcha blends from four different areas in Japan, as well as the more conventional black and green teas.
You can have your matcha in a variety of interesting ways; thin, frothy matcha tea is known as usucha, whilst the most unusual option is koicha, a thick tea that’s eaten with a spoon. And because there’s nothing better than a nice biscuit to dunk into your cuppa, OHH Cha will also offer Muji biscuits sandwiched together with matcha cream.
If you’re looking for an alternative to your usual flat white, OHH Cha draws a very nice contrast. However, you’re going to head along pretty sharpish if you want a cup of matcha, since it’s a pop-up that’s only in place until November 11th. It’s also not the most wallet-friendly cup of tea you’ll have, with a bowl of matcha setting you back £6.50. Still, it’s one of the few places in London that stocks matcha of this quality, so tea-totallers would do nicely to put down the Earl Grey and give it a try.
Find it in Muji, 6-17 Tottenham Court Road, Fitzrovia, W1T 1BF.
