London’s love affair of Mexican food runs deep. And in particular, the city has a huge soft spot for tacos. Versatile, delicious, and able to be dressed up into a sophisticated meal, or noshed off of paper plates late at night – it’s one of the greatest foods around. So, naturally, there’s a whole festival dedicated to them! The Tacover is London’s only taco festival, and is bringing back their celebration of the food and cuisine to London on May 6-7.
And where else could a taco festival be held, but at an esteemed craft brewery? Signature Brew will be hosting the taco-fuelled celebration of the handheld delights, and naturally they’ll be serving up plenty of suds to wash them down. Non-beer drinkers are plentily catered for too, as the event is sponsored by Mexican soda-makers Jarritos (who in this writer’s opinion make some of the best carbonated bevs around).
The Tacover will take place across four sessions over two days, with day-time sessions (10am-2pm), and evening sessions (3pm-9pm). The day-time sessions are family-oriented, with under-11’s getting in free and plenty of family-friendly entertainment. Kids will also be treated to a free Jarritos soda upon arrival.
Following that, DJs will be spinning tunes all through the evening for a night of music, beer, and tacos. Is there anything better? Well, they’re capping it all off with a range of competitions, such as the tortilla slap contest, clean t-shirt challenge, and hot taco challenge with an array of prizes up for grabs. Each day will end with the ‘Vendor Awards’ to highlight the best tacos on offer. Saturday will be for the judges awards (hosted by the Mexican embassy and Jarritos), while Sunday will be the people’s choices, tallying up votes from across all four sessions.
Who will be serving up tacos?
Among those confirmed to be slinging their taco-y wares on the day are:
- Homies on Donkeys (winners of the BBC’s Best Takeaway of The Year)
- MexClub
- Proper Taco’s
- Taca Taco’s
- Birria Taco
- Taco Dave
- Dos Mas
- Cantina Carnitas
- Carne Street food
- Tigre Tacos
Those with food restrictions and special diets are more than being catered for too. The Tacover will feature plenty of vegan, gluten-free, and halal options so that anyone can enjoy some taco goodness. Two of the vendors will be solely selling halal tacos, for complete peace of mind. Adding to these are ten vegan options, as well as at least one fish and two further halal tacos across the other vendors. Altogether they’re promising at least 18 out of the 30 tacos on offer will be halal, and a majority will be completely gluten-free.
So, what are you waiting for? Head to the Signature Brew site, or The Tacover’s socials, to nab your ticket. Act fast as the evening sessions are already completely sold out, with tickets now only available for the day-time sessions.
