Travel Time, the handy new website for commuters, will tell you exactly how far you can get across London – by foot, bike, car or public transport – in just 30 minutes.
I’m sure you’ve all heard of The 30 Minute Rule. You know the one: “I’ll be there in 30 minutes mate, everywhere in London takes 30 minutes to travel to.” It’s a classic.
I tend to call it The 30 Minute Delusion because, if you’re really honest with yourself, it’s total b*llocks. Even if Citymapper tells you it’s going to take 30 minutes, you always have to account for stopping at red signals, people leaning on the tube doors, and slow walkers who take up the entire pavement.
TravelTime will be real with you. No bull sh*t or fake optimism. You just have to type in a starting location – or allow it to use your current location – and it will tell you how far you can legitimately travel by different modes of transport in 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 1 hour, etc. It works out everything based on genuine routes, opposed to as the crow flies, and then maps out a shape that illustrates the reachable areas within a particular time frame.
It’s a particularly useful tool if you’re looking for somewhere to live that’s not too far from your office, or if you’re trying to find a meeting point that’s reachable for both you and a friend(s). TravelTime can display up to three different searches at once and is able to filter different points of interest, such as restaurants and coffee shops, by travel time. So, for example, if you and two friends are meeting for dinner, it’s easier to find a restaurant that’s within a specific distance to you all.
Have a play, it’s totally free to use!
