Have you ever wondered how much the internet knows about you? Mozilla and Tactical Tech want to help you detox your data at their free pop-up.
No, this isn’t some mad conspiracy theory. We’re not really living in the Matrix. But if you’re anything like us at Secret London HQ, we reckon you might be really interested in this event. From 25th October to 12th November a pop-up that’s part art gallery, part tech clinic, and all kinds of fascinating is coming to Charing Cross Road.
Over forty provocative artworks and interactive displays will show you how your data is being harvested and, most importantly, what it’s being used for. All you social media savants definitely can’t afford to miss this one.
If you’ve ever overshared on Twitter after a painful breakup (honestly, it happens to the best of us), entered one too many online competitions (again, guilty), or clicked ‘I agree’ without actually reading the terms and conditions (seriously, who reads those things?!) then this one’s for you.
The good people at Tactical Tech and Mozilla are bringing you a pop-up that’s helping to solve these problems. They’ve put together an interactive exhibition to give you a behind the scenes – or should we say behind the screens? – look into how the data we submit online (whether we mean to or not) gets used. SPOILER ALERT: Your personal information has basically become a commodity, so it really pays to learn how to take back control and protect yourself online.
Alongside their practical advice they’re hosting an exhibition filled with interactive curios. Explore the online world of the future by trying your hand at Smell Dating – using your ‘molecular intuition’ to bag the perfect partner – and learning about the gadgets of the future. There’s even an implantable microchip that can turn your fertility on and off!
They’ve even put together a Data Detox Bar manned by a bunch of helpful Ingeniuses (we see what you did there!) who’ll be kitting you out with an 8-day Data Detox Kit to transform your digital self. They’ll also be running twice-daily, one-hour workshops to offer you practical tips and resources to light the way to online safety. Sessions will offer alternative online tools – like chat apps, email providers, and search engines – to allow you more control of your data. Everything you need to stop oversharing on Facebook and ‘de-googlise’ your life! Yes, ‘de-googlise’ is a word. You can check out a full schedule of the events on offer here.
You’ll find the Glass Room pop-up at 69 – 71 Charing Cross Road, WC2H 0ND from the 25th October to the 12th November from 12pm – 8pm. The Glass Room is free to visit and you can register your interest and find more information here.
