Last night, thousands of David Bowie fans attended an impromptu street party in Brixton celebrating his life and revelling in the genius diversity of music he gave to the world. The event was hastily thrown together via Facebook following the news of his death, and while it began fairly serenely (with people laying flowers at his shop wall mural and trading memories under the Ritzy cinema’s illuminated tribute), it soon picked up, with the windows of a flat opposite thrown open and ‘Heroes’ blasted out. Soon enough, a PA system had been set up and more and more fans flocked to join in the singing, dancing and drinking…even when the batteries died, the singing continued. Just as he would have wanted.
