Sure – the music can often do the talking by itself, but finding more about the story behind it can often unlock hidden layers about the sound and people behind the art. This is what draws fans towards the music documentary, and is why the Doc’n Roll festival – dedicated entirely to showcasing them – has resonated with so many.
It’s back in 2024 for its 11th edition and has just announced its full schedule, which includes 26 film premieres and 80 different events across the whole UK.

The Doc’n Roll Film Festival
Running between October 24 – November 10, the Doc’n Roll is back for its biggest festival yet, showing documentaries across a multitude of London venues, from the riverside splendour of the BFI Southbank to the brutalist Barbican setting to the comfy seat of The Castle in Hackney.
They’ve got all kinds of musical genres represented, with hip hop, R&B, folk, rock, jazz, punk, and many more all represented across the festival that lasts for more than two weeks. It also features more female voices on the programme than ever before, and includes Q&As with filmmakers and musicians.
A highlight of this year’s festival include an International Premiere of Ol’ Dirty Bastard: A Tale Of 2 Dirtys, which looks at the life of the late founding member of Wu-Tang Clan. It delves into how Russell Tyrone Jones created his alter ego and features interviews with with Mariah Carey, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, family members and more, and tickets for the event at the BFI drop on September 27.
Teaches Of Peaches is also a big screening to look out for, with two London screenings at the Barbican and Rio Dalson – the former of which includes a Q&A with the artist! Look out for a documentary and screening of Hakeem, which follows the life of Hak Baker over five years in a look at class and masculinity; and be sure to consider the punk documentary Scream Of My Blood: A Gogol Bordello Story.
