In London neigt man dazu, jedes Mal, wenn man aus der Tür tritt, etwas anderes zu sehen – aber ein Anblick, der, wenn auch mit einigen Ergänzungen und Verbesserungen, derselbe bleibt, wenn wir ihn täglich sehen, ist der vertraute U-Bahn-Plan.
Er hat uns allen schon einmal aus der Patsche geholfen oder uns zumindest problemlos von A nach B gebracht, und doch denken wir nur selten an den Designer, der ihn entworfen hat. In diesem Jahr erinnert ein Theaterstück in der Hauptstadt an Harry Beck, den Schöpfer des Werks, das 50 Jahre nach seinem Tod weiterlebt.
Das Stück mit dem Titel The Truth About Harry Beck wird seit Mitte September im Cubic Theatre des Londoner Verkehrsmuseums aufgeführt. Ursprünglich sollte sie nur zwei Monate laufen, aber die von der Kritik hochgelobte Vorstellung wurde gerade bis zum 5. Januar 2025 verlängert, so dass Sie eine gute Wahl für einen Ausflug zum Jahresende mit der Familie und/oder Eisenbahnfreunden treffen können.
Die Wahrheit über Harry Beck
In einem Raum mit 110 Plätzen sitzen die Zuschauer in der Londoner U-Bahn und erfahren mehr über die geografischen Obsessionen von Harry Beck und seine Entschlossenheit, den perfekten U-Bahn-Plan zu erstellen. Dies gelang ihm 1931, und Sie erfahren mehr über das Leben von ihm und seiner Frau Nora, die sich auf den Weg machten, um die Punkte der kilometerlangen Gleise miteinander zu verbinden und ein Hilfsmittel zu schaffen, das auch heute noch, fast 100 Jahre später, in Gebrauch ist.
Der Autor und Regisseur des Stücks, Andy Burden, erzählte, wie ihn ein Treffen mit Ken Garland, dem Herausgeber des Buches Mr. Beck’s Underground Map, dazu inspirierte, diese Geschichte auf die Bühne zu bringen.
„Er lieh mir Kopien von Becks Briefen und gab mir einen kleinen Einblick in den Mann“, so Burden in einer Pressemitteilung zum Stück. „Die erste kurze Aufführung des Stücks fand im September 2021 im Theatre Royal Bath Ustinov Studio statt. Leider war Ken Garland nur wenige Monate zuvor verstorben, so dass er das Stück nie zu sehen bekam.“
Später fügte er hinzu: „Wir sind hocherfreut über die wunderbare Resonanz, die wir seit der Eröffnung erfahren haben, und noch mehr freuen wir uns, die Geschichte von Harry Beck in diesem fabelhaften Museum für ein brandneues Theaterpublikum zum Leben zu erwecken!“
Angesichts der vielen Details und der Geschichte, die in die Aufführung einfließen, ist dies wirklich ein Stück für Eisenbahnliebhaber, bei dem man ins Schwärmen gerät. Erwarten Sie eine Mischung aus Berichten aus dem wirklichen Leben, Anekdoten, die bei der Recherche aufgedeckt wurden, und Fakten, die bisher nicht miteinander in Verbindung standen… mit ein paar fiktiven Charakteren als Zugabe (schließlich geht es hier um Theater!).
Elizabeth McKay, Direktorin und Geschäftsführerin des London Transport Museum, äußerte sich ebenfalls zu dem Stück: „Die Gelegenheit, dieses neue Stück über den Mann hinter der berühmten U-Bahn-Karte aufzuführen, war für uns ein klarer Fall. The Truth About Harry Beck“ läuft im Cubic Theatre im London Transport Museum bis zum 5. Januar 2025. Sie können Ihre Tickets hier buchen. Die Show ist ab 11 Jahren freigegeben, das Theater lässt jedoch alle ab 5 Jahren in die Vorstellung.
