Brixton Rooftop Will Close This Month, But They’re Going Out In Style
Brixton Rooftop, Lambeth’s party palace in the sky, is shutting up shop later this month.
Fans of rooftop bars better brace themselves for more bad news. Hot on the heels of Kensington Roof Gardens closing their doors, Brixton Rooftop have announced that they’ll be closing at the end of January. Retailer Sports Direct bought the building on which the rooftop sits, and planned renovations to the roof have forced Brixton Rooftop to vacate the site, just two years into their five-year lease.
Rather than sitting around feeling sorry for themselves, the team are choosing to bow out in style. From January 25th – 27th, they’re throwing a massive three-day party, bringing back some of their favourite collaborators for a proper send-off. The party, known as The Last Dance Saloon, will take place over two floors and feature thirty different DJs and performers, playing disco, hip-hop, funk, and soul. Expect the usual suspects from London’s food scene to be in attendance, including The Lambassadors and Mac to the Future.
Since opening in November 2015, Brixton Rooftop has played host to the London Taco Festival, the Brixton Beach summer pop-up, and the South Pole Saloon, amongst others. With a little bit of luck, this won’t be the end of Brixton Rooftop. They’re on the lookout for new sites, and are exploring the possibility of returning to the current Popes Road site once work has finished. In the meantime, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that this is the last rooftop closure. Honestly, a summer without plenty of rooftop parties just doesn’t bear thinking about…
