There are some arguments that will never reach a proper conclusion when chatting with a Londoner. We’ll debate until the cows come home about whether it’s better to live north or south of the river. We’ll constantly defend our own interpretations of where London’s bounds end. And we’ll spar over pints a’plenty over the correct pronunciation of Marylebone. But one classic argument has been put to rest following comprehensive research from The Telegraph. That’s because they’ve officially determined where you’ll find the very best borough in London. They’ve even gone a step further and ranked all 32 of them in a definitive list.
Now, it bears stating that we already asked our readers where London’s best borough is, and they picked Islington for the top spot. But The Telegraph took a slightly more analytical approach with their list (we’ve never been good at maths, in our defence…)
So, where in London took the top spot? Well, it’s perhaps a contentious decision – but then, we know it would be. That’s because they’ve picked no less than Richmond upon Thames. That’s right, the one-time area of Surrey has now risen to the top of London’s boroughs. And that’s according to an in-depth analysis of each borough, taking into account “everything from high culture to live sport, green space, fine dining, heritage sites and crime rates”.

The best borough in London
In the wake of the success of Ted Lasso, Richmond has been on the lips of everyone in the city (and beyond). Visitors have flocked to the London borough to see the sites from their favourite feel-good TV show. But that’s not what led to the area being awarded the title of the best borough in London.
The area was hugely praised for its impressive greenery, natural beauty, and wildlife. No wonder, since the area is home to everything from Bushy Park to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, and Hampton Court Palace. The impressively leafy nature of the borough gives it a countryside feel, whilst still being part of London.
Richmond upon Thames was also celebrated for its low population density and crime rate. This, coupled with its impressive array of pubs and restaurants, sporting sites, and “views (literally) worthy of a Turner painting”, made it the best borough in London. It also doesn’t hurt that it was recently crowned the happiest place to live in the UK.
London’s top 10 boroughs
So, who else rose to the top of the heap in The Telegraph’s rankings? Richmond upon Thames may have taken the top spot, but some surprising areas made it into the top 10. These are officially London’s top 10 boroughs:
- Richmond upon Thames
- Westminster
- Camden
- Greenwich
- Southwark
- Bromley
- Hackney
- Kensington and Chelsea
- Tower Hamlets
- Waltham Forest
