5 Places To Watch The New Year’s Fireworks For Free
All the whizzes and bangs, without spending a penny of your hard-earned cash.
Since the big fireworks display on the South Bank is now completely sold out, you’ll need a backup plan. Luckily, there are places to see the show without paying a fortune for rooftop parties or restaurants with a view. (See more free things to do in London.)
For an unobstructed view of the London Eye display, head to Vauxhall Bridge. Whilst Southwark Bridge and Millennium Bridge are closer, Vauxhall is much quieter, so you won’t be battling the crowds. Lambeth Bridge is another good bet, but whichever one you choose, you’ll be in the middle of the river, so wrap up warm!
Just outside of the ticketed areas, Cannon Street is the best street-level view in central London. Of course, you’ll be up and close with a lot of other people, but that’s the only price you’ll pay for a good view. One thing to bear in mind: Cannon Street station may close early in order to control the crowds.
High up on Primrose Hill is a great spot to see displays across London. The highest natural point in the capital may not be particularly close to the South Bank show, but the smashing views of central and north London make it a winner. Primrose Hill will be staying open until 1am, so there’s time to watch the whole show and then make a fashionably late entrance at your party of choice.
A breathtaking display deserves an equally spectacular viewpoint. Fair warning: this one is usually busy, and seems to get busier every year. But what you’ll lack in space, you’ll make up for with great pictures. With the Tower of London and The Shard in your sight lines, that Instagram feed of yours should be looking fantastic come New Year’s Day.
The jewel in the crown of Greenwich is Greenwich Park. Whilst it may be a little far east, you’ll get a lovely overview of the central London fireworks. The Royal Observatory won’t be open on New Year’s Eve, but the park has enough vantage points to spy the fireworks welcoming in 2018.
