Holy Guacamole! London’s 3 Mexican Restaurants Every-Juan Must Visit

Even if you’re not called Juan, you must visit these.

1. Mestizo

This, mis amigos, is the ‘Molcajete Mestizo‘. A bubbling dish of gooey cheese (no idea what kind of cheese it was, but it was some of the best cheese we’ve ever had), chorizo, grilled spring onions, cilantro and avocado, with your choice of chicken, beef or vegetarian, accompanied with corn or flour tortillas. And yes, served in a volcanic rock bowl (as you do). Titled as a ‘perfect sharing dish’, if it wasn’t so fabulously filling we’d recommend getting one for yourself. But don’t. Because that wouldn’t leave enough room for their delicious starter or side dishes. As recommended by the wonderful staff we had the Pescadillas and Tostada to start, with a side of two of the finest Margaritas in London.

If you’re an Allergy-Alejandro like one of the Secret London team is, Mestizo has one the most extensive variations of free-from menus we’ve ever seen! From nut-free to lactose intolerant…as long as you’re not allergic to deliciousness, this is a place for everybody! PLUS, they have downstairs area that can be booked for events (it’s where they host their Thursday Taco Nights) so you and your vegan/gluten-free/will-eat-anything friends can Salsa (in both senses of the word) the night away together.

2. DF/Mexico

Industrial chic and reminiscent of a fast food joint in the heart of Mexico City, DF/Mexico uses traditional Mexican flavours and shapes them with modern American influences. It is essentially a “crash course in modern Mexico” that results in some seriously delicioso grub. We’d recommend the MSC Fish Tacos (Panko crumbed cod, red slaw and chipotle mayo), or any of the Tortas, which is a Mexican sandwich served New York style in a toasted brioche bun with smashed avocado, slaw and house pickle and some chilli fries. In fact, we’d recommend anything (not that we’ve tasted everything…yet), ESPECIALLY the soft serve ice cream with popping candy…takes us back to summer AND our childhood. Dreamy.

3. Peyote

Again, striking a balance between the contemporary and the classic, Peyote brings London the vibrant spirit of modern Mexico with a touch of refinery. There are starters and mains, but also lists of ceviches, quesadillas, tacos and tostadas. But we’re not talking about your bog standard chicken fajita here. Tacos include crab and avocado or tuna tartare chilemole, while tostadas include cactus flavour (it is, after all, named after a hallucinogenic cactus). With the prices to match these unusual tastes, however, we’ll be keeping this one as a Mayfair treat, we think!
